Good But Maybe Not Criterion Collection Good submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 9:47pm This is a Michael Bay action thriller, which means that it comes with all of the requisite explosions and the preposterous set-up you would expect. That said, this story of a genius chemist-turned-action-hero(!) and an erstwhile secret agent has perfect casting behind it, complex moral motivations on all sides (except for Nic Cage’s character, who seems to be more or less on autopilot), some nice plot twists that lead to unexpected places, and a lot of dramatic tension. Some of the action is a little difficult to follow given the scope of the threat and the scale of the surroundings (it’s not easy to break into Alcatraz, after all), but this is a popcorn flick at heart and everything falls into place eventually. Taking the good with the bad here, this is a solid and well-acted action thriller that holds up really well.
