Sequel to: The American agent.
September 1941. Delivery boy Freddie Hackett, a message runner for a government office, witnesses an argument that ends in murder. He waits until the coast is clear... but arrives at the delivery address to come face to face with the killer. Dismissed by the police Freddie turns to Maisie Dobbs. She believes the boy, but must maintain extreme caution: she is working secretly for the Special Operations Executive, assessing candidates for crucial work with the French resistance. Soon she is pulled into the orbit of a man who has his own reasons to kill. Reasons that go back to the last war - and could hold disastrous consequences for all involved. -- adapted from jacket

Fantastic Book submitted by sandigra on June 29, 2021, 2:07pm The Consequences of Fear is set in the fall of 1941. Ms. Winspear brings a vanished era to life with clarity and insight. Maisie Dobbs—businesswoman, widow, single mother of an adopted little girl, lady-friend of a dashing American diplomat—continues to mature and impress in her admirable mission to balance the scales of justice. Winspear’s sense of place is acutely evocative of wartime England’s fears and hopes. Dobbs remains a particularly strong and well-crafted character. Winspear never sugarcoats the horrors of war, and alongside the camaraderie shown by these characters and the Londoners surrounding them deliver terrible truths that must be endured.
A fast-paced tale of mystery and spycraft whose exploration of inner doubts and fears makes it much more.
A must-read for Jacqueline Winspear and Maisie Dobbs fans, this is an excellent fit for readers of historical and thoughtful mysteries.”

The Consequences of Fear submitted by refurniss on July 7, 2023, 9:47pm I have read all the Maisie Dobbs books and really like them. The growth of the characters over time has been well portrayed!! I highly recommend all her books!!

Effective use of theme material submitted by camelsamba on August 13, 2023, 10:38pm Two aspects I didn’t like as much. To begin with, the free French infighting feels like a repeat of the Belgians two books ago (To Die But Once). Also, here goes Maisie on another meddling mission to save people (in this case, the Hackett family). McFarlane even says to her "Ah, but that's the rub, isn't it---you can't let go of the more interesting ones. You don't want to find out who's gone off with the family jewels, or even someone else's wife, but you do like it when a real puzzle comes along to pique your interest, and if you think you can save a life along the way." She definitely has a savior complex.

I like how theme of fear keeps getting (explicitly) woven through the narrative: what fear drives you to do, how it can be a protective tool or a destructive force. I sticky-note-marked 7 different places where fear is discussed explicitly, and it was probably even more pervasive. Most of all, Maisie is warned to not let fear get in the way of her happiness, and she ponders on how fear is affecting her relationships at various times.
