Very Thorough submitted by Meginator on August 21, 2022, 6:02pm This box set is essential listening for anyone who is already familiar with the Mothers of Invention, but more casual listeners only need to listen to the studio recordings and maybe one of the live recordings as the songs are repeated between them and not much changes between the performances. That said, these songs are alive with the spirit of, well, invention, blending classic rock, funk, and jazz into a hybrid style that shifts with each track and still sounds fairly unique even today. Even the more experimental tracks have a certain groove and life to them that can’t be faked or manufactured; the music is genuine and points to a specific group at a specific point in time. Only die-hard fans need all four of the CDs that come in this box set, but anyone who appreciates musical hybrids and innovation should check this out.
