Sequel to: Tidelands.
Midsummer Eve, 1670. Two people arrive at a shabby warehouse on the south side of the River Thames. James Avery has everything to offer, including the favour of the newly restored King Charles II, and he believes that the warehouse's poor owner Alinor has the one thing his money cannot buy-- his son and heir. A beautiful widow from Venice claims Alinor as her mother-in-law, and has come to tell Alinor that her son Rob has drowned in the dark tides of the Venice lagoon. Alinor writes to her brother Ned, newly arrived in faraway New England and tells him that she knows without doubt that her son is alive and the widow is an imposter. -- adapted from jacket

Frustrating
submitted by Susan C on January 4, 2021, 8:59pm
The story of smart people doing gullible things. This had potential to be much, much more sensible.
I usually love Phillipa’s work, but this is not up to her standard.
Nice sequel submitted by Angela Argento on August 3, 2021, 7:47pm Pretty good follow up to Tidelands. Look forward to next in series
Dark Tides
submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on June 29, 2023, 12:30pm
In Philippa Gregory's "Dark Tides," the story of Alinor's family indeed takes a dark turn. Although they have improved their lives from a financial standpoint (the author never really explains how this occurs, so it feels a bit contrived), Alinor's health never recovered from her witch trial. We also learn that Alinor's would-be suitor is indeed selfish, putting his needs and his lustful desires, above all else. In this way, the series departs from the expected plot of romance novels.
The novel portrays the duplicity of and the honor of various male characters, while also displaying both the bravery and manipulativeness of the women.
The novel also includes some surprisingly accurate portrays of 17th century New England, including relations with historic Native Americans and their Nations.
Note: Be sure to read the previous novel "Tidelands" in order to understand what happens in this book.
