Recommend stopping with the first book submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 18, 2021, 9:30pm Sometimes readers and authors should just stop at a first successful story. This is one of those times. _Ready Player One_ (the prior book to this one)_was brilliant in its concept, storytelling, and execution. The sequel doesn’t pull that off.

The storyline is incredibly simplistic and remarkably identical to the first, but even more stripped down (oh wow, another Easter egg hunt/ quest!). It feels like a story that a middle school student would write (inaction- inaction- racist characterizations of other two sorta friends who don't care about main character- think about girl who doesn't love him- statement of main character who feels lonely- finally action but DAMN it's mostly about Prince -use stupidly named giant-ass sword) combined with somebody who did OCD-level research about the 1980’s and tipped a dumptruck load of facts into the story. Was there a contest to see how many ‘80’s trivia bits could cram into a page? That’s what it feels like.

Ultimately, the storyline felt juvenile and ham-handed, particularly compared to the fun of the first book. I see what Cline was trying to do, but just don’t think he pulled it off. Do yourself a favor and stop with the first, and highly outstanding, book.

Fun to revisit the world of the OASIS, but felt rushed submitted by bahr on July 23, 2021, 10:47pm I think the premise of the book was interesting and it could have been a great sequel. There were definitely some fun moments in the book, but often there were many unrealistic character moments that breaks the charm. It frequently felt like the plot was pulling things along and not naturally evolving. You could say it read more like a fan-fiction than something the original author would write. I wonder if the book was pushed out before Cline was really ready because of pressure to make the movie.

I would say that you could pick this up and read it if you really are wishing to spend more time imagining life in the OASIS, but don't read it expecting it to be Ready Player One.

Sequel to Ready Player One submitted by marvel 2099 on August 26, 2021, 1:07pm This book is amazing and is in my opinion the better of the two books so far as it has much more easter eggs and references than the first book.

Ready Player One was a fluke submitted by tisaallen on June 16, 2022, 3:15am This is a terrible sequel. I couldn't even finish it because it was pissing me off too much. It made me dislike the first one by association.

3/5 submitted by Morgsush on June 26, 2022, 8:48pm I've come to realize that Ernest Cline writes great puzzles, but isn't at great at romantic relationships. I liked Ready Player One a lot because of Wades' cleverness, dedication, and strong friendships. However upon re-reading it before reading Ready Player Two, I realized much of his interactions & thoughts about Art3miss were creepy, one-sided, and incel-y. It wasn't as prevalent in RP1 and could be ignored, but it takes up a lot more of his headspace in RP2 and becomes one of the worst parts. Art3miss' change of heart in this book isn't really explored, and she somehow falls back in love with him within the span of a few hours. Not to mention, the friendships in this book seem so much more flat, and it doesn't feel like they have the same strong bond as the first book, even with the "happy ending". The puzzles also seem much less clever, and the 80's trivia feels more encyclopedic and less interesting.

Good Sequel submitted by dahyatt on August 28, 2022, 11:18pm I enjoyed this book. While it's not as great as the first one, I liked the return to action of another hunt within the Oasis. Those that gave up on it should give it another try.
