COMMUNITY REVIEWS

I generally enjoy watching Scorcese movies, but... submitted by Tassos on February 20, 2021, 9:25am I borrowed this extremely lengthy movie (209 min, almost 3 1/2 hours!) and watched it last night.

Inevitably, I fell asleep somewhere in the middle and will go back and find out what (if anything) I missed.

I generally enjoy Scorcese movies, despite their awful and grossly unfair stereotypes of his fellow Italian Americans. This was hailed on the dvd cover as the culmination of 6 decades of moviemaking by Scorcese, so I had reasonably high expectations.

The result was close to RIDICULOUS.

So first of all, the movie is called "The Irishman", and on the dvd the three lead actors are De Niro, Pacino and Peschi. Are you kidding me? Not only are all three Italian, but they look as stereotypical Sicilian or southern Italian to boot.

If Scorcese wanted to only employ Italian-American Actors, he had much better choices to concvincigly impersonate the Irish in the movie. For example, take Leonardo de Caprio, a versatile actor who would look 1,000 times more convincing than Pacino's ... "Jimmy Hoffa" or DeNiro's small time crook-hitman-Hoffa confidant, who is also supposed to be an Irishman.

I saw the scenes I slept thru today and then I proceeded to disc 2, which was far more interesting, having videos of the REAL Irishman and the REAL Hoffa.

Good But Too Long submitted by kencza on June 22, 2022, 1:41pm No surprises here, Scorcese has history with these kind of characters and gets the actors you would expect to play them to do just that. I read the book first so I knew what was coming and was not disappointed.
