Liz Lighty has always done her best to avoid the spotlight in her small, wealthy, and prom-obsessed midwestern high school, after all, her family is black and rather poor, especially since her mother died; instead she has concentrated on her grades and her musical ability in the hopes that it will win her a scholarship to elite Pennington College and their famous orchestra where she plans to study medicine--but when that scholarship falls through she is forced to turn to her school's scholarship for prom king and queen, which plunges her into the gauntlet of social media which she hates and leads her to discoveries about her own identity and the value of true friendships.

Pure Joy submitted by Meginator on July 8, 2021, 6:49pm This book is an absolute joy from start to finish. The story follows Liz Lighty, a shy senior, and her unlikely run for Prom Queen in a rich suburb of Indianapolis. Though the overall arcs are fairly predictable for frequent readers of contemporary YA, this is a book where the journey is as important (if not more so) than the destination; its vital themes about self-acceptance and the value of seeking out and maintaining true friendships are gradually explored over time, and the story feels all the more realistic for it. Proudly Black and proudly queer, this novel is a must-read for anyone, teenager or not, who needs a shot of self-confidence or who enjoys watching a vibrant, likeable character really come into her own over the course of her senior year. I loved every minute of it.

Unexpected Surprise submitted by bookasaurusray on July 27, 2022, 10:30am CUTE, but also, WHY AM I CRYING?!?
“I never needed this race, or a hashtag, or the king to be a queen. I was born royalty. All I had to do was pick up my crown.”

More of this! submitted by khrobinson on August 27, 2022, 11:31am A classic American high school prom drama story- but with a Queer Black girl as the central character- which made it both familiar and unfamiliar. There should be 100s more books like this!
