"To discover the truth behind her mother's mysterious death, a teen girl infiltrates a magical secret society claiming to be the descendants of King Arthur and his knights"-- Provided by publisher.
After her mother dies in an accident, Bree Matthews wants nothing to do with her family memories or childhood home. A residential program for bright high schoolers at UNC-Chapel Hill seems like the perfect escape-- until Bree witnesses a magical attack her very first night on campus. A young mage who calls himself a 'Merlin' attempts-- and fails-- to wipe Bree's memory of everything she saw. His failure unlocks Bree's own unique magic and a buried memory with a hidden connection: the night her mother died, another Merlin was at the hospital. Now she'll do whatever it takes to find out the truth, even if that means infiltrating the Legendborn as one of their initiates. -- adapted from jacket

Super Fantasy for teens/tweens submitted by flemingj on July 7, 2021, 2:10pm I love books for kids, but I typically don't love fantasy. This really transcended the genre introducing young folks to King Arthur, root work, and a spectacular new heroine.

Phenomenal submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 11, 2022, 10:36pm I loved every single thing about this book (except that teenagers are saving the world again). The writing is phenomenal, the twists on the Arthurian legends are new and interesting, and the cultural awareness by having a Black author tell this story about a Black main character is SO on point and brilliantly done. THIS is why more White people should read diverse authors… because there are fantastic books that are fun to read and that bring in perspectives that we don’t live.

I will say that the number of story-going-along-HERE’S-A-TWIST was kind of humorous to me. I mean, how many times can unexpected things happen? But the story was so well-woven that they fit together and felt reasonable within the story’s world, which is 99% of what matters. So I grinned and let them pass.

I will 100% read the next book (because it’s obvious that there will be a next book). Highly recommended for high school and up.

Exciting read! submitted by 21621032124198 on June 3, 2023, 8:21am I really enjoyed this story, learning about rootcraft, Welsh, Arthuriana, and UNC. The romantic tension between Bree, Nick, and Sel is wonderful.

awesome submitted by ryan.lorenz on June 9, 2023, 12:40pm such a good book intriguing plot - a captivating read. 100000/10 stars 100% recommend

Loved this submitted by rshah on June 23, 2023, 3:56am Legendborn is often described as “Arthurian legend meets Black girl magic” and there really isn’t a better way to sum it up. Except to maybe add extra emphasis on the magic part. A pleasant surprise is the way Deonn embraces the Southern setting and the theme of two histories. The incidences of racism and sexism and the conflicts that occur when a white-centered history is pushed to become a more complete by including Black stories would be a cliché in lesser hands. In Deonn’s writing, these points not only fit smoothly into the story, but are integral to the plot. Another pleasant surprise was the way sexuality of various characters was introduced in a seamless, natural way. Every character is allowed to be their true selves. I loved this book and I cannot wait to read book two!
