COMMUNITY REVIEWS

NOT like TNG submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on June 15, 2022, 12:35pm For fans of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," this latest series, "Picard" will come as a surprise. It presents a future that is much more gritty, dystopian and depressing than "TNG" did. In "Picard," people can be addicted to drugs and alcohol. People smoke tobacco. People curse, and even drop F-bombs. Individuals, such as Picard, can have incurable diseases and even die from them, as Troy and Riker's son did.
Most significantly, Federation no longer holds onto ideals about helping people, which leads Picard to quit Star Fleet and return to his family's vineyard in France. He had previously served as an ambassador to Romulus, which had just suffered a catastrophic disaster. Picard promised the Federation would help the Romulans, but the Federation did not uphold this promise. After a seeming mutiny by robots in a mining colony on Mars, the Federation has outlawed all research about and building of androids (remember that Data died at the end of the last Star Trek TNG film). The Federation felt after this incident that it could not longer help outsiders, such as the Romulans.
Suddenly, Picard receives a message that sends him on a chase across the galaxy and introduces us to plots, intergalactic politics and lawless areas where people are bought and sold. Along the way, the audience is re-introduced to such previous Star Trek characters as Data, Troy, Riker, and Seven of Nine.
