Peter Grant is facing fatherhood, and an uncertain future, with equal amounts of panic and enthusiasm. Rather than sit around, he takes a job with émigré Silicon Valley tech genius Terrence Skinner's brand new London start up - the Serious Cybernetics Company.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Warning: spoilers ahead submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on July 7, 2023, 3:39pm We continue the story of Detective (and apprentice magician) Peter Grant in Ben Aaronovich's "False Value." I highly recommend reading the previous novels in the series so you are not completely lost with this latest installment of the Rivers of London series. In this book, Peter's partner/girlfriend, the river goddess Beverley Brook is pregnant but career cop Peter has opted to pursue a new career as a security guard at a tech company... or so we think. Readers later learn he is actually undercover.
Aaronovich delights sci fi fans with plenty of literary allusions, namely to Douglas Adams' "Hitchhiker" series. Peter later discovers that the machine he thinks he has been tracking is aptly named after the one in Adams' Like all the series' books, this novel provides a fast-paced plot, but at times the author inconsistently describes the universe he has created. Are the river gods and goddesses made from the rivers or are the humans who became divine? Are they immortal and, if so, why has the old god of the Thames been replaced by a new one? Why are there two Thames deities, each representing or ruling a different section of the same river?
I highly recommend the entire series and look forward to future novels about Peter's adventures.
