"In the late 1800s, three sisters use witchcraft to change the course of history in Alix E. Harrow's powerful novel of magic and the suffragette movement. In 1893, there's no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box. But when the Eastwood sisters -- James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna -- join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement. Stalked by shadows and sickness, hunted by forces who will not suffer a witch to vote -- and perhaps not even to live -- the sisters will need to delve into the oldest magics, draw new alliances, and heal the bond between them if they want to survive. There's no such thing as witches. But there will be"-- Provided by publisher.

Such a joy submitted by suserat on April 25, 2021, 11:19pm A book to lose yourself in, to be immersed in interesting characters and an engaging story, only to find yourself a bit brighter at the end.

Not as good as I wanted it to be submitted by emroon on August 5, 2022, 12:28pm The premise of this book seemed very good however, it had a bit too much girlboss, Pussy hat, I’m speaking energy and not enough real plot. Some of the attempts for diversity seemed performative at best. Characters of different ethnicities and sexualities were thrown in and not developed at all. It felt like they were included just to say that they were. Additionally, the logic of the magic in this alternative version of reality was not developed well. I understand that the magic had been most from the world for centuries but it did not make sense why magic could do x but it couldn’t do y. It felt a bit like there was too much that was attempted to smash into this book, I think if a few things were edited it would have been better.

A surprising new favorite submitted by KimB on August 25, 2022, 2:34am Given the description, I wasn't too interested in this book, but I love this author's writing style, so I gave it a shot. It turns out that it might be one of my top 10 books of all time. The characters are real, with flaws and stumbles and desperate hopes and wild wishes. They're each a person, whole and well developed and unique, yet very connected. There are a million little pockets of stories in each character and in each nursery rhyme (that hides history and another story all its own) and in each event. The book is fairly long, and dense with plot, but it could have easily been another 10 books and still had more to tell. And I loved how it kept pace with real history, but then veered back off into its own world, scraping by the real world just enough to almost make it believable. It's truly a find that doesn't happen nearly enough, where you fall so completely in love with the characters and the story that you want to just live in it, and revisit it, over and over again!
