"A god will return when the earth and sky converge under the black sun in the holy city of Tova... The winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial event proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world. Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a man's mind. Her ship carries one passenger. Described as harmless, the passenger, Serapio, is a young man, blind, scarred, and cloaked in destiny. As Xiala well knows, when a man is described as harmless, he usually ends up being a villain. Crafted with unforgettable characters, Rebecca Roanhorse has created an epic adventure exploring the decadence of power amidst the weight of history and the struggle of individuals swimming against the confines of society and their broken pasts in the most original series debut of the decade"--Provided by publisher.

Deserves a Hugo! submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 18, 2021, 10:25pm Hands down this is the best fantasy book I’ve read in the last few years. Roanhorse has created a new and different world based on the history of the Americas and the Indigenous people who live/d here, then adding some twists of the supernatural. Within her worldbuilding, she balances personalities, history, storyline, faith, religion, culture, politics, tension, and prophesy into a novel I simply could not put down. There’s a reason I found this on the list of Hugo finalists (could be or end up more, and it would deserve it).

_Black Sun_ made me realize that I hand out 5-star reviews too liberally these days, because this book is better than most, and yet I don’t have a way to indicate that. Time to bring my standard back to “4 is solidly good” so that “5” can let the standouts shine. This is a 5, all the way. Highly recommended!!!

the best fantasy book I've read all year submitted by nemiller on July 19, 2021, 9:45pm This book is up there with The Golem and the Jinni, and Sorcerer to the Crown, as one of the best fantasy books I've ever read. The world-building, the characters, the dialogue, the pacing... everything about this is so so good!

I listened to it as an audiobook on overdrive, and each of the perspectives was read by a different narrator, which brought the book even more to life!

A Good read submitted by JennJenn on June 28, 2023, 8:22am This book is compelling and will draw you in to it's story. It has characters that you are drawn to and a story that moves along well.
