A documentary about legendary photographer Bill Cunningham features photographs chosen from over three million previously unpublicized images and documents from the iconic street photographer and fashion historian. Told in Cunningham's own words from a 1994 interview, the photographer chronicles moonlighting as a milliner in France during the Korean War, his unique relationship with First Lady Jackie Kennedy, his four decades at The New York Times and his democratic view of fashion and society.

Lacks Context for Non-Fashionistas submitted by Meginator on August 20, 2021, 8:02pm This film uses a 1994 interview with New York street photographer Bill Cunningham as a framework for telling the story of his life, from his early years in Boston and his time as a milliner to his later years bicycling around NYC and photographing people he saw in interesting outfits. I came into this documentary not knowing anything about Cunningham and knowing very little about the 20th-century fashion world he documented, so some of the film’s nuances were completely lost on me; it doesn’t provide much in the way of context and presumes that the reader is already aware of that particular culture. In the end, I found this interesting, but also a bit confusing, and I was disappointed that the documentary never provided much in the way of concrete details. Cunningham was, regardless, obviously a very interesting character indeed.
