"Sydney Green is Brooklyn born and raised, but her beloved neighborhood seems to change every time she blinks. Condos are sprouting like weeds, FOR SALE signs are popping up overnight, and the neighbors she's known all her life are disappearing. To hold onto her community's past and present, Sydney channels her frustration into a walking tour and finds an unlikely and unwanted assistant in one of the new arrivals to the block -- her neighbor Theo. But Sydney and Theo's deep dive into history quickly becomes a dizzying descent into paranoia and fear. Their neighbors may not have moved to the suburbs after all, and the push to revitalize the community may be more deadly than advertised. When does coincidence become conspiracy? Where do people go when gentrification pushes them out? Can Sydney and Theo trust each other -- or themselves -- long enough to find out before they too disappear?" -- Provided by publisher.

Gentrification thriller submitted by avandeusen on July 17, 2021, 10:38am The idea of a thriller based on gentrification is unique and topical, but the story gets really extreme to the point that none of the important takeaways feel like they have any basis in reality.

Not great submitted by manz on August 29, 2021, 2:56pm I was looking forward to this popular new thriller, but I found that it fell flat. I did like that it involved gentrification and weird disappearances, but I seek a better thriller elsewhere.

One hot pepper of a book! submitted by chdoyle on June 12, 2023, 10:40am What if Jordan Peele also knew good romance and wrote a book? Here it is! I read it last summer, and now I recommend that people must read it in the summer. (I loved sweating along with the characters!) This book is a mystery, thriller, romance, and social commentary all rolled into one cohesive, can't-put-down story. Sure, you'll need to suspend your disbelief a bit, but lean into it and have some fun. Cole positioned the realities of life, love, and relationships within a sensational context, and I loved every second of it. She's a natural, gifted writer and everything about this story to me felt authentic and compelling. 5 stars!

The Premise Had Promise... submitted by pjaynes on July 16, 2023, 9:18pm but the ending fell flat. I was really looking forward to reading this book. I was hoping it would be as great as Jordan Peele's Get Out. And the book started out well--suspense, social commentary, likable yet flawed heroine, some romance. It started out as everything I expected. However, as the mystery began unraveling, I couldn't stay invested, and the ending was disappointing. It's not a bad book, but it didn't meet the high expectations I had for it.
