3 star for most of the book, then solid high 4 star at the end submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 16, 2021, 8:30pm I read once that a story is when “something happens, and then something changes.” Much of this book felt like the “something happens” was supposed to be Gifty’s mother arriving at her graduate apartment, but is is only across the novel that we discover that the “something” that happened was actually long in the past, and that the “something changing” has been happening ever since. In the end, it is a good storytelling device, but I wasn’t truly gripped by the book until the very end. For a good 80-90% of the book, I could happily have put it down without feeling a whole lot of loss (it was about a 3-star for me), and then the last 10-20% was a solid, high 4 star as the actions, questions, and reflections at the end pulled everything together. In the end, it still wraps up as a 3 star book for me because of how very much of the book was "meh." _Homegoing_ was much better. But Gyasi is definitely an author I will pick up again.

Disorienting in its captivity submitted by avandeusen on July 17, 2021, 10:40am There is little action (and much internal reflection) throughout most of this book, but somehow I felt continually drawn in to the main character's challenges. I loved this book and am excited to read more from Yaa Gyasi.
