outlier opinion
submitted by camelsamba on June 26, 2021, 11:14pm
If you look at reviews of the print edition, you'll see that I'm an outlier because I found this book disappointing. I don't feel like we got much insight into how Snow turned out the way he did. He obviously holds to the belief that people (not just those "district" subhumans) are inherently evil, even in the face of people and events that might shift that mindset. But how did it develop in the first place? Through life with Grandma'am? Post-war capital propaganda? Schooling? Probably a mix of all but the development arc is left under the surface.
I read parts and listened to parts. My audiobook hold came through a few days after I'd picked up the print edition from the library. I started with audiobook and switched to print for a variety of reasons, including the fact that I needed to refer back to the list of tribute and mentor names to keep them straight. I might have rated higher if I'd stuck with the audiobook because as I was reading in print, i kept wondering "was her writing style this bad in the original series??"
