"The iconic author of the bestselling phenomenon Crazy Rich Asians returns with a glittering tale of love and longing as a young woman finds herself torn between two worlds--the WASP establishment of her father's family and George Zao, a man she is desperately trying to avoid falling in love with"-- Provided by publisher.

Not great, plot building failed submitted by clk.9123 on August 21, 2022, 3:26pm Oof what a harsh rating. This book was not easy to rate because honestly, it was fun, but was it good necessarily? I’m not sure I’m very confident on that answer. Much like Crazy Rich Asians this book was over the top and poked fun at elitism, and though I don’t want to compare they are very similar in style. He includes his own notes at the bottom, the descriptions of wealth and fashion are nearly identical in composition. This is his style, no doubt.

My main issue is that this book just really lacked appropriate plot building. It was really fun in Capri but I think he didn’t spend enough time there building out Lucie and George’s “relationship.” We went to NYC and and then suddenly she’s there engaged. Then George and Rosemary are back. It just didn’t feel organic in any way, and I think this could have been split into two books to give readers and opportunity to fall in love with George, too. We saw more of Cecil and his personality than George.

There are some redeeming qualities. Such as the discussions around racism and children who share heritage of different races - I think those parts were important now more than ever. They brought a serious and very real component to the book that was otherwise a lot of fluff.

I did enjoy the reading experience despite this negative review - I think it just is what it is, there’s no use trying to make it what it isn’t, because honestly I really like how over the top and glamorous his books are. I just wish the characters had had more time to grow within the story and not just behind the scenes.
