"A curmudgeonly but charming old woman, her estranged grandson, and a colony of penguins proves it's never too late to be the person you want to be in this rich, heartwarming story from the acclaimed author of Ellie and the Harpmaker. Eighty-five-year-old Veronica McCreedy is estranged from her family and wants to find a worthwhile cause to leave her fortune to. When she sees a documentary about penguins being studied in Antarctica, she tells the scientists she's coming to visit-and won't take no for an answer. Shortly after arriving, she convinces the reluctant team to rescue an orphaned baby penguin. He becomes part of life at the base, and Veronica's closed heart starts to open. Her grandson, Patrick, follows Veronica to Antarctica to make one last attempt to get to know his grandmother. Together, Veronica, Patrick, and even the scientists learn what family, love, and connection are all about"-- Provided by publisher.

Fun book! submitted by valeriemates on August 8, 2021, 2:10pm I really enjoyed reading "How The Penguins Saved Veronica." Veronica is an eighty-five year old woman who lives in a mansion in Scotland. She decides to invite herself to visit a tiny penguin research station in the Antarctic. The researchers don't have the ability to host visitors and tell her not to come, but she goes anyway. Meanwhile, she also discovers that she has a long-lost grandson.

I especially loved the parts with Veronica's diary, written when she was fourteen, in 1940. The world was so different then! The book does a lovely job of describing what it was like to be fourteen and living in England during World War Two.

The author writes each person so that they have a very different outlook on the world from each other character, which I really liked. A lot of them are lonely and crabby. But being around penguins helps the humans to find connections with each other.
