What does it mean to be Black and upwardly mobile in a society struggling to confront the nefarious effects of racism? This arduous position came to a head when, after leaving the wake for a lifelong friend who was murdered in a Section 8 apartment complex, Charlise got into her car and drove to the neighboring city to study with graduate school classmates. This juxtaposition of experiences and insight into contrasting spaces would provide her a unique perspective from which to dissect contentious events influenced by issues of race and class. In these 12 essays covering the span of a decade, Charlise walks the reader through personal experiences as an upwardly mobile Black woman operating in predominantly white affluent spaces; each event leaving a lasting impression ripe for exploration in the context of Donald Trump and deeply polarized politics, compounding effects of structural racism, police brutality, and the ballooning wealth and opportunity gap among other persisting societal ills. Ranging from police harassment to quarrels with coworkers, these essays reflect broader current issues that have littered our nation’s front pages and illustrated a complicated American reality that must be carefully, honestly, and comprehensively grappled with.
