Excellent Book Summarizing an Incredibly Important Topic submitted by dwick on July 1, 2023, 10:14am The book summarizes and explains in May language the findings from the "Turnaway study", the first multi year longitudinal study on the effects of being denied an abortion. To date, it is the best designed empirical study on the subject, as it followed a sample of women for ten years after their contact with an abortion provider. The sample selection process is clever as well as solid: focus on women who try to get an abortion and who are at around the gestational limit of 20 weeks of pregnancy. Those a bit below will be able to access the abortion while those above are barred from it due to the legal limit. This allows to compare two sets of women with very similar characteristics and who wanted to receive an abortion, where some of them did receive it while others did not. The framework allows the authors to arrive to a clear cut empirical conclusion: having an abortion is associated with better outcomes for mothers and children than carrying an unwanted pregnancy to term. 95% of women who had an abortion do not regret it, and a sizable percentage (30%) went on to become mothers later on. The style is super accessible to the non statistically savvy, explaining the terms and methods in great detail. The presentation of the empirical findings is interwoven with the stories of several women who tried to get an abortion (some got it, sino did not) giving voice to the life experiences conveyed by the numbers and figures.
