Lady Astronauts Take Flight Again

This book significantly expands the Lady Astronaut universe, both by expanding on the characters and plot points hinted at in previous novels (particularly the Kansas City blackout from “The Fated Sky”) and by embracing the espionage thriller as a genre form. This book focuses on Nicole Wargin, one of the original Lady Astronauts and a prominent Senator’s wife who divides her time between Earthbound social engagements and Lunar assignments for the space agency. She makes for a wonderfully complex protagonist, and is uniquely suited for the predicament she finds herself in, as the Lunar community faces the possibility of sabotage from an anti-space extremist group. The mystery is well-constructed and drives the plot forward, although Kowal gives herself plenty of time to explore her characters’ psyches, their relationships with one another and with society, and the technological developments that allowed humanity to establish a permanent foothold on the Moon by the early 1960s. Everything comes together nicely, building out the Lady Astronaut series while tackling current social issues and providing a glimpse of what humanity can do, if we work together and really put our minds to it. This is a great addition to the series, and I hope that there is much more to come.
