"Camino Rios lives for the summers when her father visits her in the Dominican Republic. But this time, on the day when his plane is supposed to land, Camino arrives at the airport to see crowds of crying people ... In New York City, Yahaira Rios is called to the principal's office, where her mother is waiting to tell her that her father, her hero, has died in a plane crash. Separated by distance -- and Papi's secrets -- the two girls are forced to face a new reality in which their father is dead and their lives are forever altered. And then, when it seems like they've lost everything of their father, they learn of each other. Papi's death uncovers all the painful truths he kept hidden, and the love he divided across the ocean. And now Yahaira and Camino are both left to grapple with what a new sister means to them and what it take to keep their dreams alive. In a novel in verse tht brims with both grief and love, award-winning and bestseller author Elizabeth Acevedo writes about the devastation of loss, the difficulty of forgiveness, and the bittersweet bonds that shape our lives."--Publisher's description.

Lyrical submitted by flemingj on July 25, 2020, 9:39am Absolutely stunning book about two teens one in the US and one in the DR connected through a plane crash. These girls will stick with you long after their story is over.

Written in verse submitted by Xris on April 25, 2021, 11:40am I wasn't sure I'd like a book written in verse, because I thought I'd want to stop and look for rhyme scheme, etc. But when I got over that and just read it like a novel, it was wonderful. The story of these two girls and the tragedy that brought them together is heartbreaking. And I love all the DR culture in it and the fact that there's a LGBTQ+ couple in it. :)

Must read submitted by myriamrico on June 13, 2021, 2:25pm I couldn't put this down once I started. I was really drawn into the stories of the two teens and watching their lives unfold and overlap after a tragedy.

Beautiful story and verse submitted by alisonhatch94 on July 20, 2022, 3:18pm I had no idea the book was written in verse when I first added it to my to-read list but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved how both girls seemed to have a unique voice and you could tell who was talking just by the style of verse. I learned a lot about the DR and just really enjoyed their stories. Beautiful book.

Love the lyrical storytelling. submitted by Emily LB on July 21, 2023, 3:33pm Love the lyrical style and the gripping story telling. The story pulls you in and made it hard for me to pace myself. Some difficult themes, but overall a great YA coming of age story. 4/5 stars
