Florida is well known for its beaches, blue water, and year-round sun, but it also has a surprising wild side. It is home to pine forests, coral reefs, and the Everglades wetland, the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. Here, manatees swim in crystal-clear rivers, baby alligators practice their hunting skills, and miniature deer roam free. But every year, this state faces the full forces of nature, from wildfires to flooding to powerful hurricanes.

A View of What We're Gradually Destroying submitted by Meginator on August 21, 2021, 9:04am This documentary is a fairly straightforward introduction to some of Florida’s unique geographic areas and the animals that call them home. Primarily focused on the Everglades and the northern pine forests, the program offers brief information on some of the state’s most iconic animals and ecological systems and discusses conservation efforts that seek to mitigate some of the damage that humans cause to these natural environments. Though the overall picture is overwhelmingly depressing when you think about it for more than a moment or two (we really are determined to destroy everything wonderful about this planet, aren’t we), the documentary maintains a cautiously optimistic tone by interviewing people who are tackling these impossible challenges. I also appreciate the fact that, aside from one bird drowning and some insects getting snatched out of midair, this is one animal-focused documentary that doesn’t revel in showing, er, all parts of the circle of life.
