Unique version works submitted by cldaniels on June 20, 2020, 5:06pm This version portrays a more obvious feminist version of Jo, and variations and additions in sequences and scenes, but it works for an enjoyable movie.

The characters felt flat and difficult to connect with, and the acting comically insincere. I DID appreciate the change in ending, and the message it sends about Jo and her character.

An Adaptation for the Modern Age submitted by Meginator on July 11, 2021, 12:24pm Somehow, this film manages to be simultaneously true to the source material and yet very modern; perhaps this is a testament to the strength and enduring legacy of the original novel. The performances are fantastic, and each of the main actresses captures the unique spirit of their particular March sister at two distinct points in time, helping to ground the narrative even as it bounces between these two eras in the girls’ lives. Though the story is very close to that of the book, the major deviations make a lot of sense in context: the framing device gives the film a feminist edge that feels true to the spirit of the source material; the narrative time-hopping adds to the deep thematic development in ways that a linear narrative could not; and poor Amy gets more time on stage to visibly mature during her time in Europe instead of just parachuting in as a changed person. This is a fantastic demonstration of how an adaptation can add greater depth and nuance to an original work, taking advantage of the unique opportunities of cinema while keeping the heart of the original work intact. It’s a fantastic film and proof that (some of) the classics are still vivid and relevant today.

I've loved Little Women since I was a kid and I absolutely love her interpretation of the characters, especially Jo and Amy. this film will make you laugh and cry, it's a beautifully penned adaptation that you can tell is made with love and care.

Greta Gerwig ingeniously meshes the story lines of the young and older March girls, really plays with the timeline. I would say this movie is great for lovers of the Little Women book and previous movies, but also great for new fans.
