A memoir for food lovers! submitted by JJM.Deucher on June 27, 2023, 7:16am Chang shares insights on life as a chef, but also life as a human. It is definitely a dream memoir for foodies!

Interesting, sometimes slow submitted by bll1010 on July 3, 2023, 9:45pm I like David Chang's food shows so I tried his memoir. He's a very interesting guy. I like how direct he is about his mental health issues, but some of his intensity is strange and his story sometimes seems to weave in circles. I liked it, but I didn't love it.

compelling take on work and success submitted by wekropf on July 23, 2023, 10:18am Definitely brutally honest, without too much bombast, and lively story-telling from Chang and his collaborator Gabe Ulla. It's definitely got some hype, being a personal exploration of what's behind Chang's hustle and mad drive to success in the restaurant industry, but also includes seasoned reflections on the nature of the industry and features for a number of the colleagues and supporters (including his therapist) that played a meaningful role in his progression. Stylistically, the writing leans into occasional asides (even discursive footnotes, ha!) and transcripts of emails to get at the story with a sense of transparency and self-critique that's not too over the top. The book's publication was delayed because of the pandemic and Chang won't get caught ignoring that either --- he summons change in an afterword. I like Chang's usual approach of calling out the systemic privilege, inequity, racism, chauvinism, etc baked into the structure of the industry --- he doesn't shy from that here.
