The songs feel fresh and unique despite sitting comfortably within existing sounds; Dream Theater works from the same set of building blocks as other bands, but their use of these elements feels somehow grander in scale and uniquely purpose-driven. The album itself works best as a single experience rather than as a collection of tracks, which fits with the band’s style and thoughtful song construction. Progressive rock has a negative reputation, but this album should sway most of the genre’s detractors.
