Water is the first medicine. It affects and connects us all... When a black snake threatens to destroy the Earth and poison her people's water, one young water protector takes a stand to defend Earth's most sacred resource. Inspired by the many indigenous-led movements across North America, this bold and lyrical picture book issues an urgent rallying cry to safeguard the Earth's water from harm and corruption.

Introduction to Indigenous Activism submitted by Meginator on August 21, 2021, 11:20am This book, written and illustrated by indigenous women, pays tribute to the Standing Rock Dakota Access Line protestors by providing cultural context about the importance of water to many indigenous North American peoples (per the author’s note, the book draws heavily from Anishinaabe traditions). The illustrations have a lot of texture and layers, which makes them seem to hop off of the page and gives depth to the story’s sparse text. Educational yet accessible, this book is a great way to introduce younger readers to environmental appreciation and activism, and to remind older readers that there remains much work to be done.
