Tom is Fred submitted by DL on June 25, 2020, 4:37pm Tom Hanks plays a real good Fred Rogers. Fred was a great man who really liked and cared about other people. Good movie.

Not as good as I had hoped submitted by Will O on August 26, 2020, 9:29am This was a frustrating movie for me because the emotional aspects were excellently done and Matthew Rhys was outstanding at being a cynical man who was never unbelievably so but everytime I started to get absorbed it would cut to Tom Hanks and the uncanny *he isn't really* Mister Rogers pulled me out of the movie very often. There were times when he would give a look and Fred was there and other times when it didn't look or sound like him at all.

I tried to forget it was supposed to be Mister Rogers and instead pretended it was Tom Hanks. I think they're both just too well known separately for it to work for me.
It's a shame because I cried several times but then got slapped in the face with the bizarreness of Tom dressed like Fred.

A Fitting Tribute to a Kind, Gentle Soul submitted by Meginator on June 11, 2021, 6:11pm I don’t know if I would have had the same reaction to this film had I not watched it at the tail end of 2020, but my goodness it absolutely wrecked me (in a good way). Tom Hanks does a great job in the lead role, buoyed by top-caliber performances from the rest of the cast, and at every point where the script threatens to feel hokey it instead feels genuine, if only because anyone familiar with the real-life Fred Rogers has reason to believe in it. This isn’t a perfect film, but even if its emotional beats are predictable they still feel agonizingly true to life and the filmmakers and cast make you care about the characters and their emotional journeys. This is, much like Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood itself, a feel-good film that never glosses over or trivializes the difficult stuff; instead, it acknowledges the hard parts of life, acknowledges the very real pain that lies behind negative emotions, and ultimately empowers the viewer to make a choice about how to deal with it. It’s what Fred Rogers did so well, himself.
