The unfolding of a disaster -- Life of the devil -- Meeting the devil -- Where devils live wild -- Tasmanian devils in action -- Into the heart of devil rescue -- Developing a vaccine -- Adventure in the wild -- Looking to the future.
"In this addition to the critically acclaimed Scientist in the Field series, Dorothy Patent follows the scientists trying to put a stop to a gruesome disease before it's too late. Tasmanian devils are dying at an alarming rate from a type of tumor that appears to be contagious. What scientists are learning while researching the Tasmanian devil has potential to affect all animals, and even humans, as they learn more about how to prevent and hopefully eradicate certain genetic diseases."-- Provided by publisher.

from an 8-year-old and 5-year-old submitted by robinfowler on August 13, 2020, 11:25am this book is nonfiction but we wish it was fiction because there's a terrible disease and it's killing tasmanian devils. It gives them funny tumors on their faces and then they bite someone else and it spreads. But it's not everywhere and also some animals might be immune.
It's weird to read this during Covid because we just hope everyone can get a vaccine for covid and also the tasmanian devils can get a vaccine, too.

Content warning for kids-- starts w detailed desc of cancer submitted by readrachel on September 21, 2021, 9:43pm Readers and parents should know that this book begins with a very detailed and sobering account of a cancer impacting Tasmanian devils. It has some good pictures of Tasmanian devils in the wild and in wildlife sanctuaries, but I would not recommend it for very young children. It's not a story or gentle nonfiction read. I would only recommend this for upper elementary or older kids.
