"The Unwilling is the story of Judah, a foundling born with a special gift and raised inside Highfall castle along with Gavin, the son and heir to Lord Elban's vast empire. Judah and Gavin share an unnatural bond that is both the key to her survival - and possibly her undoing. As Gavin is groomed for his future role, Judah comes to realize that she has no real position within the kingdom, in fact, no hope at all of ever traveling beyond its castle walls. Elban - a lord as mighty as he is cruel, has his own plans for her, for all of them. She is a mere pawn to him, and he will stop at nothing to get what he wants. But outside the walls, in the starving, desperate city, a magus, a healer with his own secret power unlike anything Highfall has seen in years, is newly arrived from the provinces. He, too, has plans for the empire, and at the heart of those plans lies Judah... " --Provided by publisher.

Worst ending of a book ever! submitted by plyndale on April 11, 2020, 8:30am Worst ending of a book ever! Braffet is a good writer but unending pain and torture fills this book, which appears to be modeled on the Russian Revolution. Then after we slog through pages and pages and pages of this Braffet totally leaves us hanging at the end with nothing resolved. She could do a lot better, as she clearly has the skill, if she worked more on a decent plot.

Great book submitted by Nadili on August 16, 2020, 8:45pm Loved this book, though the darkness and pain made it hard to read at (many) times. Strong, interesting characters, and important musings on power, especially women's power. I assume the ending is just a cliffhanger and that more about Judah is coming in future books.

3/5: Not a great book, but not a bad one. submitted by ewraback on July 19, 2023, 8:27pm I liked the premise of this book, however it is so long and has a lot of unnecessary exposé. There was a lot of "Judah is special" and we didn't really find out why until the end (and it still wasn't THAT clearly answered). Additionally, I am confused by the Work and the bond between Judah and Gavin. Again, it was not explained what it was. Thankfully Judah also questioned it at the end, but there was still not answer given. If the ending of the book was like 250 pages earlier and further developed a "real" non-cliffhanger ended, it would have been much more interesting. I did like the last 100-150 pages the best, but it hasn't kept me intrigued enough to continue to the sequel.

As a note, this is a dark fantasy, emphasis on dark. There is a lot of discussion and mentioning of child abuse, abuse, incest, etc. Please be wary.
