COMMUNITY REVIEWS

superb submitted by emilyb308 on July 30, 2020, 11:39am This is my very favorite Elton John album. Each song tells a story, all the stories seemingly interconnected by an American civil war/wild west setting. I still can't believe no one's ever made a stage musical out of it. It's so easy to picture the scene of each song. Ballad of a Well-Known Gun: the train-station capture of a wanted criminal. Come Down in Time: a man wandering outdoors at night, waiting to meet a lover who never shows. Burn Down the Mission: a poor and oppressed community rising up against the wealthy men in power. Whenever I listen to Son of Your Father, I always picture a local gossip telling the tale of an act of charity gone wrong to all the eager ears down at the village pub. And the original recording of Madman Across the Water is, in my opinion, the best version of a vividly powerful song.
