Title from web page.
Molly Shannon, Susan Ziegler, Amy Seimetz, Brett Gelman.
In the mid-nineteenth century, Emily Dickinson is writing prolifically and enjoying a passionate, romantic relationship with her friend and sister-in-law Susan. While seeking publication of some of her poems, Emily finds herself facing male literary gatekeepers too confused by her genius to take her work seriously. Instead, her work attracts the attention of an ambitious woman editor, who also sees Emily as a convenient cover for her own role in buttoned-up Amherst's most bizarre love triangle.
DVD, wide screen; Dolby digital 5.1 surround.

Hilarious Almost-History submitted by Meginator on August 21, 2021, 9:04am This film brilliantly uses humorous exaggeration and dramatic irony to skewer the popular image of Emily Dickinson as an emotionless recluse; it won’t be to everyone’s taste, and it takes a while to adapt to its style, but the end result is absolutely worth it. Viewing Dickinson primarily through her romantic relationship with her sister-in-law, and incorporating a healthy sprinkling of excerpts from her poetry and correspondence, the script follows a non-linear path that suggests much more emotional depth than popular myth generally ascribes to her. In doing so, and in placing the narration dually in Emily’s words and those of the woman who posthumously edited and published her poetry (while scrubbing it of all references to her lover and, indeed, many of its subtle poetic nuances), the film questions the ways in which history is created, altered, and commonly understood. For all of its madcap moments, carried largely by Molly Shannon’s incredible performance, the film ends on a tender note that had tears welling in my eyes. Much more than an irreverent historical comedy, this film has a lot going on beneath the surface, and the more nuanced understanding it promotes is more than worth the effort of untangling its many ambitions and intentions.
