Gorgeous, vibrant novel! submitted by jaromatorio on July 24, 2020, 11:01am This novel follows the trials and tribulations of a young henna artist living in 1950s Jaipur as she caters to the needs of the city's elite, and is absolutely beautifully written!

A disappointment submitted by TeacherN on June 28, 2021, 9:25am Not terrible, but predictable. Flat characters. There are many better-written books about women in India.

Lovely submitted by krathje on July 15, 2021, 7:47am Enjoyable story of a woman in India navigating the caste system in order to find a life for herself.

Beautifully written, interesting story submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 16, 2022, 10:26pm I loved this book through the early and middle parts, when the main character was scrapping her way through creatively solving problems. There is a point when life gets out of her control and I feel like the story lost its way… she becomes acted upon, rather than the actor who she was clearly framed to be in her own life. I lost some interest at that point.

Big points for a beautifully written story, though, that introduced me to a culture I know very little about. It was explanatory without feeling like a series of lectures, and that was one of the aspects I enjoyed most throughout the entirety of the story. Still a solidly good book, an easy read because the events pulled me in, and I think it will make for an interesting book club discussion.

I wanted to like this more than I did submitted by emroon on July 17, 2022, 3:52pm I just felt like the plot of this book never took off and I couldn't get invested in the characters, maybe I need to read the sequel but this just felt incomplete. The ending was a bit of a let down

Well written and interesting submitted by Brownize on August 22, 2022, 9:50pm Enjoyed the book and the characters immensely. Character was strong and weak at the same time. THe descriptive language on India and life in that era is exciting and easy to picture.

The Henna Artist submitted by refurniss on July 3, 2023, 8:57pm I enjoyed this book. The history, the herbal medicine, and the women's story were well done!
