"After the death of her beloved grandmother, a Cuban-American woman travels to Havana, where she discovers the roots of her identity--and unearths a family secret hidden since the revolution ... Havana, 1958. The daughter of a sugar baron, nineteen-year-old Elisa Perez is part of Cuba's high society, where she is largely sheltered from the country's growing political unrest--until she embarks on a clandestine affair with a passionate revolutionary ... Miami, 2017. Freelance writer Marisol Ferrera grew up hearing romantic stories of Cuba from her late grandmother Elisa, who was forced to flee with her family during the revolution. Elisa's last wish was for Marisol to scatter her ashes in the country of her birth. Arriving in Havana, Marisol comes face-to-face with the contrast of Cuba's tropical, timeless beauty and its perilous political climate. When more family history comes to light and Marisol finds herself attracted to a man with secrets of his own, she'll need the lessons of her grandmother's past to help her understand the true meaning of courage--and what it means to be Cuban"-- Provided by publisher.

This book sticks with you submitted by beckleystover on August 13, 2020, 11:52am I read this book over a year and a half ago but it is always one of the first books I share with friends. it is a beautifully told story from two characters perspectives, that spans generations, but the themes of love, strong willed women, and courage flow through both stories.

Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick submitted by sVfGI7Glt2pz7GZgVB90 on August 21, 2020, 6:41am In this superb, deftly written tale of historical and present-day Cuba, a granddaughter reckons with her grandmother's exit from the country decades earlier. It is overlaid with the reality that sometimes the person or place you actually love is destined to break your heart. An enticing and pleasant read for lovers of historical fiction and soul-searching adventures.

Makes you think submitted by emroon on August 15, 2021, 3:57pm This book about a family who fled Cuba during the Revolution, and the modern day family's relationship with their homeland was very nuanced and well written. It made me think deeper about the complex relationship between people and their country. I also felt that the feelings, hope, and resentment surrounding those who stayed and left would resonate with many different types of people-it did for me.

A Little Slow submitted by MRSEBURGERS on June 18, 2023, 5:11pm I listened to this on audiobook and found it a bit slow. It was a bit difficult to keep track of the jumps between narrators (definitely would have been better to read the hard copy!)

Fascinating historical fiction submitted by Bethybeth07 on August 6, 2023, 9:40pm I admit I have no knowledge of cubas history, so I found this book fascinating and interesting. It is well written and easy to binge through and it sparked my interest on the history of Cuba and led me to do my own research
