Performed by George Guidall.
Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop. Now they struggle to make their way in a strange new world.

Wonderful story, excellent reading by George Guidall

I love this book. The story of two mythical creatures set free in New York City in 1899, it was much more interesting and compelling than I expected. Well worth the read
Update: Just re-read this book in anticipation of reading the newly published sequel. This time I listened to the recorded version, read by the very excellent George Guidall. I found it a little harder to follow as an audiobook, but still a 5-star story!

This book absolutely lived up to the hype! Excellent world-building, and one of the most creative and beautifully written fantasy books I've ever read. I love the intercultural interactions, the exploration of gender roles, the human- and non-human interactions. I found myself caring about every single character (even thought I didn't like some of them... ok, ONE of them... at all. But his story still fascinated me.)
An amazing, immersive, intricate, and ultimately satisfying book.
