Close, But Ultimately Misses the Mark submitted by Meginator on June 11, 2021, 5:47pm This film is so close to being good, not least because of the outstanding voice cast, but unfortunately its flaws are of the fatal variety. I absolutely loathed the character design, which robs most of the Addamses of their unique qualities and instead reduces them (and, for that matter, the supporting cast) to one of two models: one so thin that it is barely more than a single line and one rounded to the point of offensive exaggeration. And it’s not a coincidence that each of the female heroes is a stick figure, whereas the benevolent men are allowed to be more portly. The plot is built around a solid core but doesn’t have any flow to it, with the script crammed of the same non sequitur pop culture references you find in every other kid-aimed movie these days. What, exactly, does “Heeeeeere’s Johnny!”, delivered in a scene visually reminiscent of Dr. Strangelove, add in this context? As an adult, I got the references and even laughed at a couple of the better-placed ones, but I wish the writers had spent more time fleshing out the actual plot instead of trying to build up unnecessary (and ultimately unconvincing) street cred. There’s no shame in making films for younger audiences, and plenty offer either basic, mindless fun or surprisingly deep themes that resonate on many levels. This film simply doesn’t have a realistic or resonant emotional core, and its plot makes too many nonsensical leaps forward to work on any meaningful level. The filmmakers largely get the characters right in terms of personality, and the general outline is solid, but the finished product is an unfortunate mess unworthy of the spectacular cast and source material.

The Addams Family submitted by yufamily on August 7, 2022, 2:25pm A fun distraction kind of movie.
