Orphan Elizabeth Somers's malevolent aunt Purdy and uncle Burlap ship her off to the ominous Winterhouse hotel, owned by the peculiar Norbridge Falls. Upon arrival, Elizabeth quickly discovers that Winterhouse has many charms - most notably its massive library. It's not long before she locates a magical book of puzzles that will unlock a mystery involving Norbridge and his sinister family. But as she uncovers the hotel's secrets, Elizabeth starts to realize that she is somehow connected to Winterhouse, for better or for worse. Mystery, adventure, and beautiful writing combine in this exciting debut set within a hotel full of secrets.

A Good Book!

Elizabeth has a classic orphan tale: stuck with the aunt and uncle who hate her. Then, in a seemingly magical way, she gets sent somewhere wonderful. However, the cliche ends there, and that's when I began to like this book. Elizabeth is sent to a hotel with an atmosphere that I loved reading. It seemed cozy and warm, full of interesting people and good candy. However, there are all kinds of interesting people, and I loved that there was almost a conspiracy-mystery-puzzle + magic. It was a great read, and I loved how well thought out everything was, from the family tree included in the book, to the use of a cipher in a mystery game. I also think it was cute how a word ladder was in each chapter title. It added that icing on the cake.
All in all, this isn't the page turner everyone will be talking about for ages, but it is definitely worth reading!
