Coldplay-ish in a Different Coldplay Way submitted by Meginator on June 12, 2021, 9:52am Depending on your feelings about Coldplay, this album is either ambitious, pretentious, or perhaps a little bit of both. Musically, the album incorporates several styles, from Coldplay’s own signature light-infused pop-rock to...gospel. The results are a little uneven, and on balance I preferred the tracks on the “Sunset” end of the album that employ more traditional song structures, which the band excels at. This half of the album includes several catchy songs that don’t sacrifice impact for structure, although the overtly sociopolitical content feels a bit clunky in context. I applaud the band for trying to expand their sound and do something different, and while it doesn’t always land the album definitely offers a surprisingly cerebral listening experience that I found generally enjoyable and at times genuinely emotionally affecting.
