This breathless adventure in the shadow of Armageddon takes its heroes to the ends of the earth and into the oneiric depths of their own souls.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

This might be my favorite movie of all time submitted by valeriemates on August 14, 2021, 11:15am The movie "Until The End Of The World" is an amazing romp all around the world, from country to country, under the shadow of the threat that a nuclear satellite is about to fall, with unknown consequences that might be incredibly dire. The movie was filmed in 1991, and it predicted what technology might look like by the year 1999 -- so sometimes the characters are using technology that seems everyday to us -- like using a GPS to locate somebody -- but when the movie was filmed it was an un-heard of whiz-bang piece of future technology. Other times the movie guesses wrong -- like when everybody is using public telephone booths to make video calls. Though the movie does do a gorgeous job of making video calls look like an ordinary everyday thing.

Also, the movie does a fantastic job of showing lots of different countries in interesting ways -- from a hotel in Tokyo where the rooms are tiny little boxes barely bigger than a bed, to the wide-open outback in Australia, with stopovers in Europe, Russia, California, on trains, boats, planes, a pickup truck, and even a helicopter. There's a love story, some unexpected plot twists, and some of the best music of any movie ever. Evidently Wim Wenders asked a lot of groups to anticipate what music they would be making in 1999, and then he built that into the movie -- with gorgeous results.

The version of the movie that I saw at the Michigan theater in the mid-1990s was three hours long. The library has the Director's Cut, which is a stunning five hours long. My family split it into three or four sittings, so by the end it felt like we had watched a mini-series. I absolutely enjoyed both versions. In the library's longer version, I thought it was neat to see parts that had been cut out that had been added back in. Though even that version is still trimmed: Wikipedia says the original version of the film was twenty hours long!

Anyway, I don't think this movie is going to appeal to everybody, but I dearly love it!
