"From the infinitely inventive author of How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe comes a deeply personal novel about race, pop culture, assimilation, and escaping the roles we are forced to play."-- Provided by publisher.

Smart writing in a unique style submitted by flemingj on June 26, 2021, 9:33am I understand why this book is winning awards. I found the story and the style rather different, but am not sure I quite understood was the author was trying to say.

Funny and Sad submitted by kath on July 17, 2021, 5:36pm Written in the style of a script this book deals with racial profiles. Parts of it are funny with a general underlying sadness about American culture.

Asian Fusion and Racial Profile Highlights submitted by ekjensen on August 7, 2021, 10:57am In addition to the previous 2 reviews which are spot on, this book with its fused "television" script and narrative style, once again emphasizes the misdirection and bias of Americans including Asian immigrants on the latter's culture and assimilation.

Writing style submitted by bcartm01 on June 21, 2022, 9:04pm The writing style, as a script, took a little bit to get used to. However once I got used to it, I loved this book. It is an often that you hear such an honest perspective from an Asian author about how Asians are represented in films, but also how they are viewed by people in the United States in every day life. I really loved this book.

Screenplay Style submitted by bjkoch on July 15, 2022, 1:40pm new and refreshing

best book by Charles Yu (so far) submitted by nemiller on August 2, 2023, 9:34pm Interior Chinatown had everything I love about Yu's previous work, and has improved on some of the thing that I didn't love. I listened to the audiobook, which was narrated by the very talented Joel de la Fuente.

- Unique format, pulled off perfectly, so it's fresh and not gimmicky? Five stars.
- Serious, often unexamined, topics explored with nuance? Five stars.
- Humor? Five stars.
- Narration that enhances the already unique format? (audiobook only) Five stars.
- Female characters? Still a weak point for Yu, but definite improvement.

Highly recommended!

Pretty good submitted by zmclaugh on August 9, 2023, 1:16pm An interesting format, which really adds to it.
