"All her life, Spensa has dreamed of becoming a pilot. Of proving she's a hero like her father. She made it to the sky, but the truths she learned about her father were crushing. The rumors of his cowardice are true - he deserted his flight during battle against the Krell. Worse, though, he turned against his team and attacked them. Spensa is sure there's more to the story. And she's sure that whatever happened to her father in his starship could happen to her. When she made it outside the protective shell of her planet, she heard the stars - and it was terrifying. Everything Spensa has been taught about her world is a lie. But Spensa also discovered a few other things about herself - and she'll travel to the end of the galaxy to save humankind if she needs to"--Publisher description.

Sanderson tells amazing stories
submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 17, 2020, 9:13pm
While I understand that this is a YA book, and is written to be targeted to a teen audience (and so clearly not targeted to me at 48), books where a single teenager saves the known universe just make me want to cry. The world doesn’t work like that. We present things this way (look at how we tell Rosa Parks’ story, or MLK’s), but our heroes NEVER stood alone… not even in the moment when they did their “heroic” thing. They did what they did because they had organizations behind them holding them up, and because they had, typically, years of experience under their belts. Want to talk about Greta Thunberg instead? OK… but she has her parents, and while she has extensive media attention, the planet hasn’t reversed climate change because she has given media-covered talks at the UN.
So that’s my massive gripe. Having gotten that out of the way, yes, of course I know it’s a story. Sanderson tells amazing stories. He writes great characters (including an AI ship in this one, how fun is that?) and always creates fascinating new worlds. There really isn’t ever a reason *not* to read Sanderson’s work, IMO. He shows us how it’s done. I’ll definitely read the third when it comes out.
