"Juliet, a self-identified queer, Bronx-born Puerto Rican-American, comes out to her family to disastrous results the night before flying to Portland to intern with her feminist author icon--whom Juliet soon realizes has a problematic definition of feminism that excludes women of color"-- Provided by publisher.

stunning novel about family, identity, and racism + privilege submitted by on June 11, 2021, 8:26pm
Juliet Milagros Palante is a lover of books, all things purple, and badass women. When Juliet leaves the Bronx eager to learn from her favorite feminist author, Juliet doesn't get the answers she wants. Juliet Takes a Breath follows the wild, mesmerizing, quest of a young queer Puerto Rican learning to love herself.

Thoughts: Juliet Takes a Breath is a masterpiece. It is breathtaking.
This novel is told in first-person, from Juliet's POV. Juliet's voice is clear and consistent. And Juliet's relief during Hawlowe's period ceremony (with rose petals!) was bliss at its' finest.
Juliet Takes a Breath makes the reader think aloud. What does it mean to be an ally? When is it time to speak up/forgive/listen/step back? Furthermore, the novel provides a lot of context (for ex: Puerto Rican history and LGBTQAI+ terms) without disrupting the novel's flow. Again, it is never the writer's responsibility to educate their readers on google-searchable principles. However, Juliet Takes a Breath provides an excellent foundation for readers to do their own research. All things said, a stunning novel about family, identity, and racism + privilege.

Intense submitted by Xris on December 11, 2021, 10:33pm Very interesting perspective to get insight on, from the view of a queer POC to white society and how even people who are trying get it wrong sometimes. Also interesting to get more info on polyamory. A bit too intense for my middle school GSA, but maybe when they get to high school...
