The Nonrunner's Marathon Guide for Women is the ideal training manual for women who don't believe that running is their biological destiny but who dream of crossing the finish line nonetheless. Nonrunners offers a realistic training schedule and is chock-full of how-to's and funny observations, which she felt were lacking in the guides she had consulted. She also integrates entries from her journal, sharing everything would-be marathoners need to know about the gear, the blisters, the early morning workouts, the late-night carb binges, and most important of all, the amazing rewards.

Running Advice from a Regular Person submitted by Meginator on July 3, 2020, 3:55pm This book offers the same general advice as most other beginners’ running guides, setting itself apart by leaning heavily into the the author’s sarcastic, irreverent attitude. This will offer precisely the right kind of motivation that some would-be marathoners will need and will endlessly irritate others, making this an excellent book to try out via the library before committing. Like many other authors, Dais incorporates her personal story with her advice, making a marathon seem simultaneously more achievable (after all, as she endlessly reminds the reader, she completed one) and utterly terrifying (she doesn’t really pull punches). I went back and forth on the writing style myself; I appreciate a good dose of realism in my running books, but sometimes it all gets to be a bit much. Still, the advice is sound and approachable for non-runners, and the book is remarkably funny for a how-to guide. This won’t be to everyone’s taste but it does offer a nice change of pace regardless.
