COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Timeless Wit submitted by Meginator on August 23, 2020, 6:34pm Tom Lehrer’s dry, ironic wit has a timeless quality to it, despite the fact that so many of his songs deal directly with the anxieties of Cold War-era politics. Yet Lehrer manages to to make subjects as varied as the imminent threat of nuclear annihilation, the mechanics of (*ahem*) disease transmission, and mathematics laugh-out-loud hilarious, deploying little else aside from cheerful piano ditties and appropriate vocal affectations in service of his humor. While this particular collection inevitably omits some of the classics (“Oedipus Rex” is the most glaring absence), it offers an excellent, broad introduction to his work, accompanied by video of a 1967 performance in Oslo that showcases his unique joke delivery and Electric Company videos set to educational songs about grammar. Tom Lehrer’s legacy is evident in every contemporary comedic musical release, and this collection is a great representation of his unique and lasting genius.
