Based on the Vertigo comic book series from DC Entertainment, the mobster husbands of three 1978 Hell's Kitchen housewives are sent to prison by the FBI. Left with little but an ax to grind, the ladies take the Irish mafia's matters into their own hands, proving surprisingly adept at everything from running the rackets to taking out the competition, literally.

This film follows three mob wives who essentially take over for their husbands after the latter are sent to prison. Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, and Elizabeth Moss all offer brilliant, nuanced performances of women with very different motivations for becoming directly involved with organized crime, with excellent supporting performances from several additional talented actors and actresses. The plot can be a little convoluted at times, with obscured motivations, but altogether the film makes for an interesting trio of character studies, with plenty of action and a killer (if not entirely unforeseen) twist. This is a welcome new take on the traditional mob movie, and it’s nice to see complex women at its heart.
