Great book submitted by jcottey on August 17, 2020, 9:23pm Draper is a fabulous author, so I was looking forward to reading this book and was not disappointed. It reads very quickly and doesn't drag at all. Isabella goes back and forth between weeks at her divorced parents' houses. We get to read how she feels about this constant changing of homes, her parents being divorced, her friendships at school, and how she is treated because she has a white mother and a Black father. Excellent book!
Great! submitted by BookDog on June 12, 2021, 4:36pm I had to read this for school and I was not bored during it. I would recommend this for 10-14 year-olds.
Amazing submitted by SadieRose on June 23, 2022, 9:30pm It is an amazing book. So deep and amazing.
An Incredible Read submitted by Jooyeon on August 22, 2022, 5:12pm I loved Sharon Draper’s book Out of My Mind, so when I saw this book at the book fair, I immediately bought it. The main character, Isabella, has a tough journey ahead of her. She was leading a life hard enough with her being a blend of Black and White, but it becomes harder as her family splits and becomes two families, and racial tensions spread through her school. With the help of friends, family, and events, Isabel learns to love every unique part about her. If you haven’t read this book, I recommend that you absolutely do!

Wonderfully captures the perspective of an eleven year old
submitted by Diananana on July 6, 2023, 7:56pm
Isabella struggles to sort out the dualities of her life-- shuttling between the homes of her divorced parents, navigating society's binary race categories. The author does a great job of portraying an eleven year old's point of view. The protagonist is no longer a child, but is still inexperienced in the ways of the world. For instance, midway through the story, when she and her friend are the victims of racial profiling, they agree to hide the incident from their parents. This perhaps is an unsatisfying outcome to adult readers. From the girls' perspective, they just didn't know what to do in this new situation and wanted to avoid trouble.
I don't want to create a spoiler. I'll just say that the climactic event is quite realistic and plausible. Some young people might find it distressing. Indeed, as an adult I found it so. Some young people may need help understanding why the events play out as they do.
