Lion King submitted by SBNB on June 14, 2020, 8:35pm It was fine, but it can’t replace the original. Timon was more annoying in this one. My 3-year-old loved it, but I wouldn’t choose to watch it again. One positive, though, was I finally found out what Pumba was saying when Timon cut him off with "Pumba! Not in front of the kids!"

Ok submitted by AprilCDB on June 16, 2020, 8:56pm The original cartoon is better. My 8yo thinks so too.

Too True to the Original submitted by Meginator on August 23, 2020, 6:36pm The Lion King features an engrossing emotional arc for its main character, a strong score with instantly iconic musical numbers, and stunning animation, yet it all seems somehow...familiar. For nearly all of the first half, and indeed most of the film as a whole, this feels like a shot-for-shot retread of the original classic, which is fine but not terribly exciting. The use of realistic character models limits their expressiveness and eradicates much of the potential for visual humor (I personally missed this most during the climactic moment of “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King”), though it does at times imbue the film with a serious, somber tone befitting its most tragic moments. But, as amazing as the animation can be (particularly the background effects), I’m not really sure what this film adds to one of the best animated films of all time aside from memorable performances from the comedic relief (John Oliver as Zazu, Billy Eichner as Timon and, most brilliantly, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa). This version of the film is still pretty good, as you’d expect from such a high-profile project sticking so closely to such excellent source material, but it doesn’t do much to distinguish itself. On balance, I much prefer the original.
