"In 2014, Maia Kobabe, who uses e/em/eir pronouns, thought that a comic of reading statistics would be the last autobiographical comic e would ever write. At the time, it was the only thing e felt comfortable with strangers knowing about em. Now, Gender Queer is here. Maia's intensely cathartic autobiography charts eir journey of self-identity, which includes the mortification and confusion of adolescent crushes, grappling with how to come out to family and society, bonding with friends over erotic gay fanfiction, and facing the trauma and fundamental violation of pap smears. Started as a way to explain to eir family what it means to be nonbinary and asexual, Gender Queer is more than a personal story: it is a useful and touching guide on gender identity--what it means and how to think about it--for advocates, friends, and humans everywhere."--Amazon.

Educational read submitted by Xris on June 5, 2021, 12:54pm Since I am advisor to a GSA at my middle school, this was important for me to read, so I understand my non-binary students better. It's a quick read that I think everyone should read. :)

Highly recommended submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 13, 2022, 10:10pm Absolutely fantastic. This lovingly and sensitively written memoir in graphic novel form shares an intimate journey of gender questioning and self-discovery. This is one of those books that helps a reader understand others’ perspectives, or maybe for some, will help them understand themselves. Highly recommended.

Life Changing submitted by jpkander on August 12, 2022, 5:16pm What a beautiful memoir. It makes everything very clear and understandable. This is a must-read.

Lovely Memoir & "Most Banned" in 2022 submitted by sdunav on June 9, 2023, 11:05pm Honest, unflinching, sensitive coming of age story of a person who struggled to define both their gender and sexuality growing up in northern California. E uses Spivak pronouns (which I had never heard of) - an alternative to the singular they.

Both the artwork and the story are compelling and enlightening. This is apparently one of the "most banned" books in the US right now. It is isn't terribly graphic in terms of explicit drawings or lascivious description, so I guess it's just the ideas that are obscene in some peoples' minds.

Validating submitted by chowcy on July 16, 2023, 8:46am This is such an important book for queer people. Many of the scenes are relatable and not things I hear about a lot in mainstream culture, so I think many queer people, especially nonbinary / ace people will feel less alone after reading this. The hatred for pap smears, what it feels like to have gender dysphoria, not knowing what label to use (am I lesbian if I'm nonbinary? How do I differentiate between kink and identity? Am I just attracted to androgynous people or do I want to BE androgynous), when to come out (sometimes it's accidental!) and the reluctance to come out (but ultimate decision to come out anyway because we know that seeing other openly queer people helps questioning and closeted queer people). There are a lot of real, common queer moments in this graphic novel that is helpful for queer and non-queer people alike

its a really good book submitted by blondi on August 2, 2023, 8:27am and i think its important that more people will read this book
recomended

Important read submitted by Droeske1 on April 2, 2024, 4:52pm This was my first graphic novel ever! I came across it as part of the oscar nominated short "The ABCs of banned books" and immediately decided I needed to read it. I think this is a very valuable read for everyone but especially those of us who have gone on a journey of trying to understand our sexuality/romance orientation and FINALLY having a word to put to things. (Also for families of non-conforming kids). The fact this isn't in every middle and high school library is a shame!
