A Modern Disaster

Warning: Animal lovers should tread especially carefully around episode 4, and most episodes depict severe radiation burns/poisoning.
Although it takes some liberties regarding the factual historical record and feels very wedded to a particular perspective on Soviet politics, this series presents a gripping, personal look at the immediate aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster. The cinematography and performances are outstanding, and the dramatic pacing keeps the story fresh and compelling even for viewers who are already familiar with the incident. By tying the narrative to specific characters, the creators raise the dramatic stakes and create immediate and sustained emotional investment. Without intending to, I watched this in a single sitting; it’s an absolutely fascinating dramatic take on an incident that was at once worse than I had imagined and yet could have been even more apocalyptic.
Gory but necessary submitted by ferielp on July 23, 2021, 9:45am Excellently depicted the depth of the tragedy and the level of horrors witnessed by those involved in the immediate clean-up.
