COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Rocketman on Blu-ray submitted by a2sue on August 13, 2020, 5:14am The Blu-ray of Rocketman is tons of fun! Loved the tunes and learning a bit more about Elton's background.

my favorite film of the year submitted by emilyb308 on August 27, 2020, 10:49am I’ve heard that some folks out there didn’t love Rocketman as much as I did. If you went into it expecting a straightforward biopic, I can see how you might be disappointed—but to be fair, I have to wonder why anyone would expect that from a movie about Elton John. This is a musical fantasy with flair, both wildly surreal and deeply human. At its heart is a powerful message about overcoming trauma and learning to love yourself. Each song in the soundtrack is perfectly positioned to support the story as it unfolds. Taron Egerton flawlessly acts and sings his heart out. (No, seriously. He deserved all the awards.) Not only was this the best movie I saw in 2019, it’s also one of the best movies I’ve ever seen, period.

Well, It Suits Its Subject Quite Well submitted by Meginator on July 22, 2021, 9:16pm This film is neither a standard biopic nor is it a traditional jukebox musical; in a way, like its subject, it does its own, ostentatious thing and mostly gets away with it. The script plays fast and loose with facts and with timing, creating a surreal atmosphere that better conveys the flow of Elton John’s life than the actual events of it. This bold choice works, when it does, because it suits John’s supersized stage presence and allows for some vividly imagined and lavishly filmed musical breaks. But despite its more emotionally oriented approach and Taron Egerton’s convincing embodiment of Elton John, the story feels somewhat detached from its real-world subject: despite witnessing John’s radical transformation from a shy boy to flamboyant superstar, viewers would be hard-pressed to point to the pivotal moment or significant emotional shift that predicated such a dramatic change. Without a concrete timeline or consistent thematic focus, the film feels more like an experience than a narrative, not quite a true story but not quite a fantasy either. This film is best approached on its own terms, with few expectations; like Elton John himself, it’s decidedly different.
